And so it was upon us.
Unannounced? Almost so. For if one is fair, a game has a winner and then, one who didn’t cross the line. But for a fan, who has invested so much emotion into it, the loss inexplicably hurts.
Yes, it is all about that one day and then an unbearable outcome. As a fan, I am entitled to live in the cocoon I weaved around the invincibility of my team.
And why not? Heading into the final, here was a team running roughshod over everyone. So what, then, was there for a fan to be apprehensive about?
While all sorts of experts will weigh in on what should have been, what could have been, it is all in retrospect. Some, I agree, having played at some level, may be right in their evaluation of things, it hardly brings comfort to the desolate heart. Their well meaning thoughts may find takers when the time injects its anesthesia and the pain dumbs down.
However, those experts, who like to see it as something more than a game and crow with their smug attitudinizing about some subaltern culture coming or not coming of age, please steer clear. (And not just for the time being!)
And those who want to rub it further into the face and gleefully gloat about the opponent’s win, you are a declared ‘enemy’!
As for the votaries of ‘the better team won’, please lay it on thick a few days later, when the mind can prevail over the heart and let it see reason. As for those who call upon a ‘sporting demeanour’, now is certainly not the time.
Of course, a time will come when one will dissect the outcome, see the flaws (which were visible but one chose to push it aside in an euphoric run), and debate ad nauseam. Then maybe, I will be open to discuss the pitch, the team composition, the turning points, et all.
Yes, no one has died and the sun has risen again but taking it on the chin and moving on will be gradual. Till then, bleed my little heart.
The memes, the jokes and the satires, however, are welcome. For, what can provide dispassionate solace, if not humour.
